About the event

What lies beneath appearances? Can softness (a fabric, a gesture, an identity) conceal something sharper, stranger?

Silk is associated with luxury, sensuality, and softness. Its shine catches the light and creates dramatic contrast, transforming draped surfaces into studies of texture and contrast that hover between realism and abstraction.

In The Silk Room, AURA plays with textures and queer historic meanings of all kinds of soft materials. Tattooed skin introduces motifs of innocence, power, and pursuit, unsettling ideas of purity and permanence. Using a playful language, these materials can advance to explore themes of hidden desire, identity, and communication.

The Silk Room becomes a place of quiet ambiguity, where materials whisper their meanings and softness reveals its sharper edge.

‍About the artist

AURA is a multidisciplinary artist based in Düsseldorf, Germany. Combining drag, visual arts and online aesthetics, they create virtual worlds in collages, paintings, video art and performance.

Inspired by the workings of social media, Aura’s work centers around the topics of privacy, human connection and living in the digital age. A co-founder of many endeavours, AURA hosted drag performance formats like Velvet Curtains, which quickly racked up a large ensemble of local and international alternative drag artists, founding the first recurring live drag stage of state capital Düsseldorf. AURA’s stage work has since included multiple plays at TMD Düsseldorf and Malkasten Düsseldorf.

‍In 2023, AURA founded TOO MUCH, a Düsseldorf based artist collective producing drag shows, parties, and more. Together with AURA's in-house production hub AURA inc., TOO MUCH is the creative mind behind the drag show YOURS TRULY.

Beyond their artistic pursuits, Aura has successfully ventured into event production with AURA INC. This project has curated and organized a series of themed parties that offer immersive experiences and safer spaces for the local queer community.
